GAMES IDEAS

Here are a few games ideas:

  • Fishes swim – each child to place their chair in a circle facing outwards.  An adult to give each child a fish, either Cod, Mackerel or Haddock.  Then the leader calls ‘Cod swim’ and those who are Cod ‘swim’ (walk) around the outside of the circle, the leader can also call ‘turn tide’ and all the fish swimming change direction.  When the leader calls ‘shark coming’ the children have to keep going in the same direction and go back to their seat as quickly as they can.

  • Relay race - in two teams to see who can collect the most balls or other objects.

  • Make a shape - come up with three different shapes on theme e.g. Goliath (standing up and reaching as tall as you can), David finding a stone (crouched down) and David playing a harp.  Choose someone at the front to turn away and prepare to choose one. Everyone else to choose a shape to make then the person on the front makes a shape and whoever is the same is out. Keep playing until you have a winner.

  • Pairs - you can play a variation on pairs on a topic by printing duplicate pictures and the children have to match them together.

  • In teams with different coloured balls the children to take it in turns to try to throw the small balls into the umbrella.

  • Egg and Spoon race - you can buy egg and spoon game sets which work well for this game if you plan to use it regularly.

  • Treasure Hunt – cut objects on theme and hide around the room, the children to relay and find them all.

  • Chase the Dice – spread dice around the circle and whenever the child gets a 6 they pass it to the next person.  Whoever has two dice is out, repeat until you have a winner.

  • Leader of the band – Choose a child to leave the room and a child to be the leader of the band.  The leader of the band starts singing and playing an imaginary instrument and everyone copies, they then switch to different instruments and everyone follows.  The child who has left the room then has to work out who the leader is.

  • Duck, duck, goose - you can also play variations on theme e.g. lamb, lamb, sheep or David, David, Goliath etc.

  • Bingo - you can play make up bingo cards on theme for the children to play.
